Nonspheres IV
Luis Berríos-Negrón

July 19 – August 18, 2007

The lattice structure in this work was modeled in Rhinoceros. Beginning with a precise 3D model of the gallery space, the artist freely manipulated the form of the lattice based on the ergonomic demands of installing and navigating through the system. The software allowed the creation of 776 parts, or 194 unique tetrahedral modules with 4 unique segments of rope configuring the parametric structure. Three scripts, written by Steve Form (MIT/Graft), served as tools to extract the precise measurements, positions and tolerances of all the edges, connections and nodes. The scripts then produced a spreadsheet that allowed for the fabrication and assembly of the lattice by a local rope manufacturer. Similarly, the script mapped the position of each hook attached to the walls, ceiling and floor of the gallery space; the assembly of the lattice took no more than a day and a half.
