The Canadian government has announced that they will cut funding for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). This fund normally supports Canadian artists, musicians, curators, and other cultural workers abroad, enabling them to participate in international festivals, exhibitions, concerts and lecture tours, dance and theatre productions, conferences, and academic exchanges. The $11.9 million cut over the next two years represents a 100% withdrawal of the Public Diplomacy budget – money that has helped support various Canadian projects abroad, including Rodney LaTourelle’s solo exhibition at PROGRAM. The amount cut is not a big sum for the government, but it will effectively stop the promotion of Canadian arts and culture abroad.
If you are a Canadian citizen, and would like to speak up against this cut, please visit this website and add your name to the petition.

Part philanthropist, part activist, Hansen ‘rented out’ his wall space in the exhibition as advertisement for artists and galleries. The money raised was then given as financial support to a man named Spirit whose shop in Hackney (East London) was in danger of closing due to the area’s rent increase resultant of the upcoming Olympics in 2012.
